How do I Register a U.S. Patent Internationally?

patent_office.jpgPart one of this series on international intellectual property registration focussed on Trademarks. Today, we will address Patent protection on a global level.

The World Intellectual Property Organization ("WIPO"), is an agency created by the United Nations in 1967. Its mission is to guarantee the protection of intellectual property rights worldwide. To facilitate this goal, one of the many programs the WIPO currently manages is known as the Patent Cooperation Treaty ("PCT"). The PCT is a mechanism for filing patents in multiple countries using only one set of documents. By filing one “international” patent application with the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office ("USPTO"), U.S. applicants can concurrently seek protection in over 125 countries.
